We were going on the tour so I took some pictures for ya'll (just in case you never make it to the Lemp Mansion ).

Brief Overview:
John Adam Lemp arrived in St. Louis in 1838 and found fortune in lager beer. The brewery enjoyed success and he died a millionaire. William J. Lemp succeeded his father as the head of the brewery. In 1870 Lemp was the largest brewery in St. Louis.

In 1901 Frederick Lemp, William's favorite son, died under mysterious circumstances. Three years later, William J. Lemp shot himself in the head in a bedroom at the family mansion (the room across from where we stayed ).

The brewery's fortunes continued to decline until Prohibition (1919) closed the plant permanently. William Jr.'s sister Elsa committed suicide in 1920 (I read the article, I think she was murdered ). After selling the brewery in 1922, William J. Lemp, Jr. shot himself in his office (in the mansion). His son, William Lemp III, was forty-two when he died of a heart attack in 1943. William Jr.'s brother, Charles, continued to reside at the house after his brother's suicide. An extremely bitter man, Charles led a reclusive existence until he too died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound (in the bar of the mansion). The body was discovered by his brother, Edwin.

In 1970, Edwin Lemp died of natural causes at the age of ninety. (How sad is this ).
