This a painful, yet necessary section, called
Signs that we were killing our hair but we ignored
a.k.a. What we don't miss...

~ excerpts from a thread on the nappturality.com archive forum

Ouch! Yuck! Where is my hair?! Huh?
Huh: What was I thinking!?!?
if one perm didn't take, slap another one on the next day and it didn't take either.
having limp hair that almost never held a curl throughout the day
different color streaks that even hairdresser thought were highlights I put in
having to drink carbonated soda before the perm because I heard it helped the burning. (double huh? I've never heard of this????? ~ ini)
getting angry when it started to rain, or get humid
spending like $70-$80 every six weeks. (Like I don't have bills to pay )
having a stylist tell me that I need to color my hair because it has that "not really black or brown" color (from relaxers)
actually believing that the reason my hair broke off was insufficient zinc and Vitamin B in my diet
buying a special shampoo to control my dandruff problem
buying tons of products to combat dryness and breakage
believing that the hair of women in my family automatically thinned after puberty (I thought it was genetics!)
having to use a perm for "sensitive" scalps
 having near-orange hair from over-processing and over-heating.
being mad at your hair because u tried 2 bump, curl or wrap it and it didn't "Lay or act" right, after u trained it to lay flat?
Beauticians telling me my hair was over processed, yet asking me why I waited so long to come back for a touch up
getting the "Toni Braxton" cut every 6 months to combat breakage and "to make my hair grow"
having hair that never grew past a certain length and having my stylist tell me it was hereditary
I can't believe the most blatant sign I had was when my boyfriend nuzzled my neck and said, " Gee your hair smells like its on FIRE!!!!
being able to grow my hair long with extensions only to return to the relaxer and have ALL my midbacklength hair break right on off up to my shoulders (did this MULTIPLE times by the way)
never letting my man touch my head, in fear that he would mess up the style. And forget about any romantic "activity" that could sweat out my perm.
One time soon after I got a touch up I found a little lump on the back of my neck and rushed to the doctor's office. The doctor took one look at my lump and my hair line and said "It looks like you have a chemical burn and this is just a reaction to it." Boy was I relieved that it wasn't cancer or something and just a reaction to the relaxer I just got! What the heck was wrong with me and my momma for continuing the madness!!
not being able to let boyfriends play in my hair (even though I love head massages) for fear they would feel the naps hiding on the inside. OR fear that hair would keep coming out in their hands.
cleaning huge globs of hair out of the shower after washing hair, especially after a process
having to test out new relaxers every few years because my relaxer would no longer "take" or "went out quick"
going to parties or working out and trying not to "sweat out" my hair
waking up an hour earlier to hot curl my hair
turning the flat iron on as soon as I get outta bed so that it would be hot enough to get my hair straight
when a perm didn't totally straighten my hair, so I'd press it
having the hairdresser tell me (scolding) my hair was damaged because of something I was doing wrong. Yeah, what was wrong was the fact that I kept going there!
wearing gloves to protect your hands from a chemical that touches your scalp
My experience: This seems so silly to me now but, I had a standing appointment on every other Friday. I would get a relaxer every 6 weeks and a shampoo every other week totaling $155 every 6 weeks ($1344 a year ). When I left my hair would be bouncy and shiney. It would smell like fire and chemicals but I would think "it'll air out". One of the reasons I went on Fridays was the smell of my hair....BUT...I could never get my hair back to how it looked on Saturday. By Sunday it was just hanging there...what a waste
Lessons Learned: I can spend less money on my hair per year and have healthy, full, clean hair that stays on my head and stays off my bathroom floor. I've learned that my puff is beautiful and my scalp doesn't itch way as much when it's clean. I've also learned that my hair is not hard, it's soft...it's not bad, it's great...it's not dull, it's shiney....I mean, I'd been lied to ya'll . Lastly I've learned that wisdom (knowledge) really is the principle thing.
